Teacher

for examinations or for fun

all ages and abilities

I teach music theory and piano.

This includes

reading and writing music - playing by ear - improvisation - popular styles e.g. ragtime and boogie woogie - music history including jazz

I started learning the piano at age six; began playing by ear and wrote my first compositions at age eight.

In 2010 the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) asked me to work with them as a trainer for their Professional Development division. To date I have delivered a residential programme for Music Teachers on playing by ear. A one day version of this programme for ABRSM is scheduled for April 2011 in Manchester and London in June 2011. The residential version is planned to run at Benslow Music Trust, Hitchin, Hertfordshire in February 2011.

Much of my working life has been spent as a musician recording with EMI Records, Polygram and others as a songwriter, arranger, musician and producer. For television (Channel 4 and HTV) and BBC Radio I have played, performed and written music. For the professional theatre I have written, arranged and directed the music.

Music is one of the subjects of my BA degree from University College, London. Studying for this gave me knowledge of Music History and Theory. The study programme for the Certificate in Teaching of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (CTABRSM) allowed for practical insight into teaching piano and associated skills up to Grade 8.
